Depth Of Field – Are You Deep Or Shallow?

If you plan to do any shooting with large apertures, you’ll need to be able to determine the depth of field for your subject. Choosing the proper aperture can make your composition a real object of beauty, rather than a hum-drum photo for posterity.

I created a simple depth of field widget for my latest interactive book for iPad, Compact Camera Fundamentals: An Interactive Introduction To Photography. If you’re a Mac user, you can download it here and use it with Dashboard.

However, having a depth of field calculator in the field is obviously more convenient. Here are a few free options for your smartphone, either as apps or sites…

iPhone: Simple DoF, TrueDoF

Android: Depth of Field Calculator, DoF Calculator

Web: DoFMaster.com

Large Apertures Create Shallow DoF

Labor And The Utopian Aspects Of Art In Scandinavia

My work will be appearing in an Oslo-based art society publication that explores the many ways labor has influenced art in Scandinavian countries.

Arbeiderbilder (Working Pictures), will be issued as a short-run printing, limited to 1,000 books. The release date is midsummer 2013.

The photo to be used is of the Albertine relief sculpture by Alfred Seland.

There’s No Hour Like The Golden Hour!

Ok, so it’s really Golden Hours, since there are two of them…

The Golden Hour is the hour of light at dawn and at dusk. The light during this period of time is exemplary. It’s softer, warmer, and shadows are less harsh (if they appear at all). Golden Hour light makes colors come alive and is perfect for photographing flowers or landscapes.

Knowing exactly when each Golden Hour starts and ends is important. You have a few options:

For iPhone owners, there’s a great free app called Magic Hour.

Likewise, for Android owners, there’s a free app by the same name, but made by a different developer. Check it out.

For those without a smartphone (unfathomable, I know) or those who wish to skip the installation process and would prefer something in the browser, there’s the Golden Hour Calculator site.

Trying taking photographs during these periods of time and compare them with ones you’ve captured during the rest of the day. I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the difference!
